Harlem Désir has been French Minister of State for European Affairs since April 2014. Born in Paris in 1959, he graduated in Philosophy at the University of Paris 1 – Panthéon-Sorbonne. From October 2012 to April 2014, he was First Secretary of the Socialist Party. From 2004 to 2009, he was Vice-President of the Socialists and Democrats Group at the European Parliament, in charge of economic and social issues, and international trade. From 2002 to 2004, he was Vice-President of the Delegation for relations with the United States at European Parliament.
